A genetic mutation has been discovered that causes insomnia

In one of the largest studies of the association of genomes with insomnia, researchers have confirmed that this condition is hereditary and have discovered genetic mutations that may be responsible for it.
Led by psychiatrist Murray Stein of the University of California, San Diego, the study analysed data from STARRS – the largest study of mental health among US military personnel to date.

As part of the project, DNA samples were collected from over 33,000 soldiers examined to see which genetic regions show links to insomnia characteristics.
After analysing the data, insomnia was linked to the existence of specific genetic mutations on chromosome 7, and in people of European origin there were differences on chromosome 9 as well.
